Wilpattu is one of major wildlife sanctuaries of Sri Lanka. No wildlife excursion can be truly experienced unless you go on safari and Wilpattu National Park.Wilpattu has the richest and oldest historical past behind it .Stories has it that prince Vijaya who came from east India the founder of Sinhalese nation set foot on Sri Lanka in Thambapanni near Mannar.He’s known to marry a local tribal princes called Kuweni.
The uniqueness of Wilpattu is that is has many “willus”. There are amount of more than 50 that makes a network of waterways inside the park. Inside Wilpattu is has been recorded 31 species of mammals.Amongst them Leopard ,Sloth Bear, Elephant, Spotted and Barking Deer, Sambur, Wild Boar and even Crocks. Wilpattu is home for abundance birdlife. There are birds such as Jungle Fowl, Painted Stork, Owl, Terns, Gulls, Eagles and Heron. It’s also home for some of the migrants birds.
